  • Is Anything Worse than Labor Pain?

    Nurse Jenna by Nurse Jenna

I was watching TV the other night and a commercial came on for Orajel. A woman looking very happy to have gotten relief from her tooth pain says (and I’m paraphrasing) “I had an impacted tooth and the pain was worse than labor pains.” I thought to myself—Hmmm...that is one impacted tooth. Wouldn’t it be great if we just had a big supply of Orajel in labor and delivery. Who needs Lamaze classes or epidurals when there is Orajel to the rescue! I’m joking, of course. But I have had people tell me sinusitis is worse than labor. I’ve also had them tell me that ripping off the tape from taking out the IV was worse than the pain of having the baby (I think they had already forgotten).

So have you experienced anything more painful than having a baby? Or has nothing been worse than labor pain?

About 6 months after I had my daughter, I developed an abcessed tooth. My gumline became very swollen to where it looked like a had a couple jawbreakers in my mouth. I had ended up having to get my tooth removed (I couldnt afford the root canal that was needed) but yes, I tell anyone when it comes up in conversation that my tooth problem was incredibly worse than having my daughter. It was a pain that my brain couldve never fathomed having.

well starting yesterday I'd say it has been worse because the pain I am having feel slike labor pains and we went into the hospital and aparently it is ligament stretching pain mixed with how the baby is laying on my spin and only at 2 cm dialeted, so to me that is worse because it hurts VERY bad and it is constant like a constant numbing pain, and the baby is not ready to come yet!

so far NOTHING has been worse than labor pains. i took the epidural though...so fairly no pain. but the amount i did have before they gave me the epidural i wouldnt want to get again and havent found anything to match it yet.

My mom said that her gall-bladder attack was much worse than childbirth (which she did twice drug-free).

I didn't find natural labour that bad.  I love how the contractions rise and fall and give you a break in between.  The pain is really intense, but at least intermittent.  Plus the endorphin rush afterward makes you forget all the pain anyway.  So I think other pain could definitely be worse, especially if there are no breaks in between the pain.  Plus when you're in labour you know the pain is all for a good reason which makes it more bearable I think.

Labor was hard, but I think our minds trick us into forgetting because it's sooooo worth it.  Meanwhile, other pains we go through don't have that much of a positive outcome attached to it, therefore...they're way worse (at the moment).  Heh.

The worst (most painful) part of my labor was the botched epidural I received...which didn't take, meaning I went through all the pain of getting it and still ended up feeling every bit of the labor pains as well.

The only thing I've ever experienced that has come close to being as bad as labor pains was a dermoid tumor. I developed one while pregnant with my second daughter. The tumor had actually grown tentacles and was twisting itself around my ovary. It took hours for the doctors to figure out why I was in such excruciating pain; and, of course, I couldn't have any pain meds until they figured out why I was hurting. Miserable. Very miserable.

I would think so, the tooth pain lasts longer. I was told that once the baby is out the pain stops. O.o right?

I just want to experience labor pain!! lol  I'm a week overdue.  I'm sure it will be the worst pain of my life, but I'm soooooo ready!!!

  • Manse_Life@xanga

Ditto on the gall bladder attacks, mush worse and I've had two natural births (1 at home).

  • filtered_sunlight@xanga

I've heard a lot of people say that X-experience was worse than labor or that labor just wasn't as bad as all the "hype" surrounding it.

I would think that tooth pain would be more debilitating than labor pains since my experience was that mine flared up from my wisdom tooth all the way up the side of my head. I couldn't think, eat, or really rest and it was a non-stop pain that knocked me on my butt for days before it could be pulled.

  • leslieburditt@xanga

Ive had one natural(no epidural) birth and one with an epidural. The one with could be a lesser pain than a lot of things but the only thing I have experienced in my life that was even close to the natural labor, was when I had mulitple Gall Stones and was doubled over in pain hysterically crying. I had my Gall Bladder removed and this was all about 4 months after that horrific natural birth lol Labor pain is TERRIBLE!!!! lol

@IamKelleyK@xanga - I was in your shoes... i was 10 days late and my dr. didn't want to induce me right away... I was only 1 1/2 cm dilated and 50 percent effaced.  I had Jeremiah the day before I was scheduled for induction.  But I remember every time I had a TINY pain or braxton hicks that I would get so excited, praying it was the real thing and would check the clock like crazy,  and that every time I went to the restroom I would check for bloody show.  It will happen, don't worry! Congratulations!

After my first child I developed gallstones and then it stopped working all together.  Those attacks were horrible, near the pain of childbirth, but when I had the attacks while I was 7 months pregnant, that was WORSE than child birth.

  • MelodicPuppy@xanga

Honestly labor was no big deal to me.  Sure it hurt like really bad cramps, but it wasn't nearly as violently painful as TV makes it out to be.  I was progressing at a cm.or more an hour and when the dr. checked me at 6 cm, he suggested I get my epidural then because with the rate I was going, I could possibly miss my window of opportunity to get one.  Even though I could have probably hacked it out au naturale for a little longer, I didn't want to risk not being able to get one, because let me tell you I didn't want it to get to that bloody painful point! My epidural was a dream come true.

However, my recovery was a whole other story... that was far more painful than any labor pains I had.  I had a 3rd degree laceration and had quite a few stitches, plus my episeotimy.

Labor hurt but I don't remember it as clearly as I remember getting my industrial piercing. I don't think I cried during labor but I sure as hell cried after that needle went through my ear.

(For reference, I ended up with an emergency csection and looped up on drugs. That may be why I don't remember actual labor much. Had I had a vaginal birth, I'm sure I would say that was worse but in my experiences, ear hurt more.)

  • hatcherbee@xanga

I've given birth 4 times. All vaginal. No pain meds. No epidural. Twice with pitocin (grr). I've also passed 4 kidney stones and currently am haboring a pile of stones in my gallbladder. I can safely say that passing the kidney stones was worse and those gallbladder attacks are a close second. During the course of passing them my urethra collapsed once, I needed surgery twice and sported a stent (sp?) three times. Having just given birth less than two weeks ago I still can say with certainty that I'd much rather give birth every day than EVER pass a kidney stone again.

  • jediwa72@xanga

There's a few...I didn't think labor was that bad...and that's saying a lot since I was in labor for five days with my oldest.  Anyway, I had a tumor on my uterus...the pain from that was killer!  I have one again, while I'm pregnant right now...and that is pretty stinking painful at times.  Sinusitis migraines are pretty bad...but I thought labor was worse than that...and I have chronic sinusitis.  Okay, but beating it all...I have a gall bladder that only works 9% of the time...if I eat the wrong foods that is massive bad pain!...Def. worse than labor!

  • MommyGEM_RN@xanga

Thankfully I haven't experienced anything worse than labor pains! But at least labor pains are intermittent and you get a break between each contraction! And I too have forgotten how painful it really was! Severe ongoing pain, though, I would imagine would be pretty bad! I hope to never experience that!

  • nicole_richie_lovex3@xanga

Kidney stones are horrible! It depends on your tolerance for pain as well as how big they are. I was in the hospital with a kidney stone in May... They put a stint in through my urethra and I was peeing straight blood for a week. The pain medicine never worked either... It was constant pain. I couldn't lie down or stretch because it would hurt. Then I became in so much pain that I couldn't stop throwing up. It was horrible! The nurses in the hospital told me that labor will be a breeze from here on out.

  • SeeBeeWrite@xanga

Maybe, since I gave birth to such a tiny baby, labor wasn't as bad for me, but I had an HSG that made me wish I were dead.

  • stixandstonz@xanga

Absolutely nothing in my life has hurt worse than labor pains.  I wa sin 76 hours of hard labor after the water broek when I had my last baby.  Thats why he was my last.

  • ashleynmofford@xanga

I had two children completely natural...and I will say, I had the stomach infection H.pilori (I think thats what it was called) and it caused stomach ulcers, That, is the only thing I have experienced that is WORSE than labor. I would give birth naturally again, but Never, would I do anything to cause those stomach infections AGAIN!!!

  • unluckyclover84@xanga

hands down my 2 dry sockets hurt way way  worse than delivering my son. i was in labor for 21 hours and it was nothing compared to the searing pain of the dry sockets. i litterally begged my hubby to kill me i was in so much pain.

  • eskimo_maiden@xanga

OMG! How can I ever forget? My third child was in breech position (footling breech) when I delivered her and my labor progressed so quickly (i gave birth in less than half an hour from the time we got to the hospital) that it was not possible to do a C-section nor was there enough time for an epidurial to take effect. Imagine that! I  don't know how I was able to get through it but my oh my, the PAIN was excruciating!  The fact that my guy was there with me holding my hand all through out the delivery made a lot of difference though.  'twas better than any anesthetic can do!  Every time I am reminded by that day , I still kind of wince you know. But looking at my naughty but very sweet and lovely daughter now (she's turning 4 on Nov. 22), I can say without a doubt that she's worth it!

  • amberanddylan@xanga

I have had migraines that are equal too the pain I felt.  But it's still very different.  Could be the how it's viewed too.  Labor is for a reason and that get's you through it.  Other pain that you don't know when it will end or what is happening too you can feel worse.
