Do Babies Get Asthma?

D's been doing this weird thing that I'm not sure whether I need to be worried about or not... It started several days ago, where he'll be nursing and then he does this sigh/deep breath thing that kinda reminds me of when you've been exercising and are just getting your breath back. When he breathes in it will be long and deep and almost sounds kinda raspy (not *quite* wheezy), and then the outbreath will be kinda forceful, and often he makes noise along with it like a humming or grunt. I don't know if he's just playing around, experimenting with the kinds of noises he can make (he seems to do that a lot) or if there's something else going on. He does it mainly when he's eating (and kinda once he's nursed off one boob but is still suckling), but then a few days ago he did it a couple times after he'd finished eating and I was just holding him.
Is this just a normal thing babies do sometimes? Could this be a sign of something like asthma? Do babies get asthma this early?

babies CAN have asthma pretty much from birth, but if a child is under 2, it's very difficult to diagnose. If you're concerned about the sounds he's making, you need to take him to the doctor and explain what you heard, or at least call and find out whether he/she recommends you come in for a check-up. I've always said that America wants us as parents to be way too cautious, but I'm not going to be the guy who doesn't listen and ends up having something happen to his kid.
i would go get it checked out. my son did that at around 4-6 months and it turned out he had pneumonia. which has developed into cold induced asthma. so yes, please go check it out. better safe than anything else!!
My daughter did a lot of funny breathing things for a couple months, including short pauses in her breathing followed by gasping, etc. This turned out to be normal newborn behavior and went away by the time she was 4 months or so. It's best explained by your baby just started breathing air when he was born, it's still a very new process, so some kinks are normal. Use your judgment, if it bothers you, ask your son's doctor. I would watch and see how often it happens, when it happens, does it get better or worse, more frequent, etc. Maybe call the nurse's line (if you have one) and ask them?
My sister and I have had chronic asthma since birth (we're almost 20 now), so... yes, it's definitely possible. However, I guess our case is different - we were 4 months premature with underdeveloped lungs. Safe to say as everyone else has, best to go get it checked out. Hope he's okay! :)
I'm no medical expert, by any means! But I do know that my little sister had asthma from birth. She grew out of it, but she had it. So don't rule it out!
My daughter also has asthma. She's 3, and has had it from birth. I have too. So, to be on the safe side, I'd get it checked out just to be sure. Better safe than sorry!
Is it possible that your LO is congested? My LO will make that noise sometimes if she's getting congested or sick.
Get your LO checked out by a Doc if you are worried.
My children had asthma at an early age, but when they are under two, they call it bronchiolitis. [sp?] My son had it so bad that his oxygen level would drop and he needed to be on breathing treatments every two hours in the hospital.
Thankfully my daughter didn't have it as bad as my son did, and I'm not even 100% convinced that's what it was, even though the doctor treated it the same because of my son's history with it.
Does it sound like a rattling in his chest? If so, it can be normal - I remember my babies doing that and I asked my pediatrician and he said it was normal. I'd definitely mention it at your baby's next doctor appointment though!
Yes, I do believe it's possible to get athsma that young. As a matter a fact I have a little cousin who is a mere 3 months old that has athsma. Make sure to mention this at your baby's visit but I think its normal to tell you the truth. Don't fret until you know there is something wrong. If not you are going to drive yourself crazy with worry.
