  • Looking Towards the Horizon: Getting Through Tough Times

    Nurse Jenna by Nurse Jenna

So today is another brief “Just-Jenna” post. (In case in you don’t remember, I steal this from "Just Jack," back from the days of the TV show Will and Grace). In another words, no medical advice, no statistics--none of the usual. It is a day off work for me, but not exactly by choice. I’m doing a little bit of the typical things: catching up on grading papers, looking for a carrot cake recipe, returning neglected emails and the sort…but mostly I am just feeling sorry for myself.

I had to call myself off work because of a fairly significant knee and ankle injury that has been bothering me for a few days now. It is just days until my marathon that I have trained 6 months for and has consumed a good chunk of my life for that time period. Yesterday I did my crying; today I have improved to just moping. I sat in a bath of ice, stretched, massaged, elevated, have taken ibuprofen, read positive running quotes--all to no avail.

What it comes down to is this—you work really hard towards some things in life, and you hit obstacles at the last minute. I am trying to stay hopeful and positive, but it really hard as I am hobbling around the house. But I found a quote I like and I am trying to keep it in the back of my mind and I thought it is true for whatever you are going through. Tough times in a relationship, a phase with your kids, problems with money, annoyances at work, or goals that you are falling shy of accomplishing.

"It hurts up to a point and then it doesn't get any worse." - Ann Trason

Which means it can only get better, right? What have you told yourself to get through tough times, whatever they may be? (Help me out here).  Because eventually we all find ourselves back on our feet again at some point, right?

    Aw bummer about your leg.

I usually say 'It could be worse." I am a very optimistic person anyway and it takes a lot to get me down. Whatever happens it honestly could be worse and bad times don't last forever. "This, too, shall pass." Sending happy, healing thoughts your way.

Dont think about what hasnt worked (it will only make you more upset) - try something else!!  Even if it seems off the wall, maybe it will help!  I hope it feels better soon!

Things will always get better, it's just a matter of time until they do.  Just as an FYI, according to my chiropractor, ice actually doesn't help the healing process, it actually hinders it because it locks joints up and stiffens muscles...try some heat then doing the stretching.  Hopefully it will help out!  You'll have to let us know if you're able to run and what your time was...it's not about winning the race, it's about finishing it.

I'm a 'nothing hurts forever' kinda girl. Everything heals eventually, you just have to wait it out.

This is one of my favorite quotes:

"When you get in a tight place and everything goes against you, till it seems as though you could not hang on a minute longer, never give up then, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn."-Harriet Beecher Stowe

The human spirit can be very resilient. Hang in there, and good luck with everything!

    feeling...

I'm a really good procrastinator, so I found some quotes for you that I thought were inspiring and/or funny (all from runtheplanet.com):

When I was about 14 or 15, and running in a pretty muddy cross country race, one of my shoes stuck in the mud and came off. Boy, was I wild. To think that I had
trained hard for this race and didn't do up my shoelace tightly enough!
I really got aggressive with myself, and I found myself starting to
pass a lot of runners. As it turned out, I improved something like
twenty places in that one race. But I never did get my shoe back.

We are different, in essence, from other men. If you want to win
something, run 100 meters. If you want to experience something, run a
    marathon.

I'm never going to run this again.

Grete Waitz, after winning her first of nine New York City marathons

I was unable to walk for a whole week after that, so much did the race
take out of me. But it was the most pleasant exhaustion I have ever
    known.

Emil Zatopek's description of the Olympic Marathon win in Helsinki

    Good luck!  Keep us posted!

@XcatfeeshX@xanga - Thanks for the running quotes....I love running quotes....or just quotes in general, actually.  I've been listening to good running music too.  That helps.  Like Tom Petty's "Running Down a Dream" :)

Here's some inspiration for you: http://www.teamhoyt.com/ Don't know if you have heard of them, but they show us that we can get through any obstacle.

I use the affirmation healing quotes from Louise Hay, when I am hurting --

for a knee - I am flexible and flowing.  forgiveness. Understanding. Compassion.  I bend and flow with ease and all is well.

for an ankle - I deserve to rejoice in life.  I accept all the pleasure life has to offer.

    feel better!

    love

I feel like that happens to me lately more often than not.  I feel like the harder I try to make things better for our family, the more obstacles get in my way.  It takes a lot for me to get defeated, well sometimes anyway, but when I do I usually cry pretty hard and can't sleep for a week or so.  I like to reason things out but there are times when there is no logic that can explain.

I'm so sorry about your knee, it's such a shame that you have come so far only be sidelined before you even begin.  Feel better.  Find a friend to confide in, don't be afraid that your feelings are silly, let our your emotions, grieve, and then laugh as hard as you can.

@motheroftheyear - I know this won't apply to a lot of non-running situations, but let me tell you, doing this list has gotten me so mentally prepared/excited....I cannot tell you!  I'm sure something similar could be done in other situations, like for your family. I plan on cutting these into small strips and pulling one out at each mile to say to myself.  They will be my motivational milestones, so to speak.  Some I made up, some are from song lyrics, some quotes etc.  Even making the list put me in a better mood.  Here is the very long list.

    my 'mantra'....This too shall pass.

My grandma used to tell us, "oh, hunny, I'm sorry. But I bet it will be better by the time you are married." Guess that doesn't work any more though.

  • HisLadyofVirtue@xanga

    you said it exactly.....

    this was my post today..........

Well our mirror and desk sold today.  Yay.  Jordan made his Specialist, but we have yet to see any of the money from it.  And we need to get a few things for the baby, and we need groceries.  So now we can at least afford the groceries.

I never thought that we would be in a place where we had to liquidate some of our assets in order to eat!

It can only go up from here though, right?

Praise God that things have sold so quickly.

It all comes down to perspective!!!
