  • It's All Monkey Talk

    Mama Whaleby Mama Whale

I think after this post, I qualify to be Mama Monkey. Just joking!  Ever since Baby Whale discovered who Curious George is after I got her the doll near our home, she has been doing monkey talks on me, and it's been harder for me to decode exactly what she wants.

Every time I ask her something she goes on rambling like a monkey, which has been giving me some concerns.  Papa Whale and I have been teaching her some words and some sentences.  I just hope this is just a stage, otherwise we have to cut out all her little monkey friends.  However, I feel really bad cause I enjoy reading her story books that have monkeys in it, such as Goodnight Gorilla and Caps for Sale.  Anyway we'll see how it goes.

Did/do you have any concerns about your child's speech development?

My parents were concern about my speech development when I was a child.

There knew what was wrong with me when I was about three or four after seeing one or two doctors there found out I got a disability called dyspraxia which slightly affects me speech,  but I got badly bullied thoughtout my schooling :( and could not wait to leave school when I was 16,  after secondary school I just had minor problems with some people not understanding what I say.

complete side note- I slept with my Curious George from the age of 3 till i was about... married .  Mine got burned the very first day I owned it (don't play catch the monkey near a wood stove), but I was too devoted to give it up.  I think I'll pass it on to Newbaby.

Hahah I'm sure its just a stage.  It's probably fun to her.  Mimicing what she hears at story time is probably a better thing than not.  I read today in a baby mag that girls like to mimic (and sometimes they start as early as 4hours old) YEAHH crazy.  I'm a mom to a boy.. So ..

But its probably good that she is doing what she does in story books because I'm sure she cherishes story time and she's bringing it along with her and remembering it!  Which is always a plus!

    I like your site :)

    and she's beautiful

I apparently feel the need to comment on everything tonight

We are stuck on Da and it is beginning to get a little tiresome. She screeches and hoots and hollers but I would really like another identifiable syllable to be uttered relatively soon.

All of my kids have talked really early, so I never had any speech concerns with them. And, personally, I wouldn't worry about your child either. My five year old will go around talking like a monkey or dog...or whatever it is he is hooked on at the time. When he is asking me for something I just tell him straight out "It is fine if you want to play, but if you expect me to understand you and want me to get something for you you are going to have to talk like a human so I know what you are saying." Of course, he is 5 so he understands this (he has been doing it since just before he turned 4). So I guess I would just try to explain to her that there is a time for play and that is great, but mama needs to know what you are saying so sometimes we need to use people words. Don't know if that would help, but I don't  think you need to worry about her speech just yet. (Though it could be a good thing to get on tape and use at her graduation or wedding.)
