  • Is G33K Hereditary?

    Mama Monkeyby Mama Monkey

Before I start this blog, let me say that both I and my husband are proud of his g33k. He is a computer programmer, into video games, legos, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. And I have absolutely no problem with it and don't at all think it is a bad thing. That being said...

How did it rub off on my children?

We took a recent family trip to the Mall of America for the sole purpose of visiting the Lego Store. Monkey1 (8) has a minimum of 2 dozen different Lego sets, about half of which are Star Wars Legos. He knows things, specifics about characters and ships, about Star Wars that very few adults I know have ever heard of. It amazes me how fast and thoroughly his little brain sucks this stuff up.

Monkey2 (5) is also very into similar things. The best part of the whole Lego store experience for them was seeing a life sized Jango Fett (a bounty hunter from Star Wars). Even Monkey3 (22 mon) seemed amazed by it. (Admittedly, Lego models to this extreme really are amazing.)

And I have to say that I really just don't get it. I have nothing against Star Wars or Legos. I, myself, was very into Legos when I was younger. I just don't see how Star Wars is so fascinating to young kids.

So, I have decided that g33k must be hereditary. There must be something in the genes that makes it impossible for kids to resist such odd things that they, by legitimate means, should never be attracted to. I suppose there is a certain amount of an environmental factor too. What they are exposed to is what they are going to be interested in.

I guess the moral of all this is just that it amazes me how much more every day my kids become more like 'mini-men' - more and more like my husband every day. It makes me very glad that I have chosen the man I did as my husband and father of my children. Someday they, too, will see how fortunate they are.

Do your kids also show interest in the same things that Mom and Dad enjoy?  Which do you think is stronger - hereditary factor or environmental factor?
