  • Home Sweet Home

    Mama Foxby Mama Fox

    Papa Fox and I have been talking a lot about buying a house and what we want. We are both excited about buying a home in the next year and not having to deal with renting anymore. I've been making plans in my head about what colors I want to paint the rooms, the curtains I will buy, etc. Being in a rental, I really don't feel like decorating and being as broke as we are I can't afford to right now anyway. We have only a few things hanging on the walls, no curtains (or curtain rods for that matter), beige walls all through the house. Beige is better than white but still, I long to get some bright colors. I don't want to put nails in the walls to hang picture frames because it's just something we'll have to fill in when it's time to move. I just don't want to deal with it especially knowing that we aren't going to stay here long. It makes my house seem a bit dull though.

    It's been that way since we got married. It always felt like we were in transition, especially with Papa Foxbeing in the military. We bounced from my mom's house to a couple of apartments then a rental house. The longest we were in one place was a year and 1/2 and it was a not too great house in the only good part of town. I didn't really like being there so I didn't bother making it more homey. Now, I finally feel like we've put down roots. We will most likely stay in Austin until Papa Fox retires from the police force and maybe after that. I'm excited about living here.

    We were talking about 3 vs 4 bedrooms, how Papa Fox wants to have an office and wondering how much house we will be able to afford. I found myself saying "I love this house but I think the boys' rooms are a bit small." But really are they? Yeah they are smaller than the rooms we've had before but their stuff fits, they aren't cramped or crowded and the boys have enough room to do what they like to do (i.e make a mess.) We honestly don't need that much space. When I really think about it, this is the nicest house either of us have ever lived in and really the only bad thing is our truck is too long to fit into the garage. I think this house is a perfect fit for us and I hope to find one like it when we are ready to become homeowners.

    My favorite house of all time: Small is the new big.  I found her blog a couple years ago and I love her style. I hope once we buy a house and are able to go all out with decorating that my home will be as bright, cozy and inspiring as Sara's (but of course not that small, 382 sq ft Yikes!). I look through those pictures from time to time and I'm still amazed by them. (Even more amazing is that Sara and her family have moved into an RV and are touring the country. Live Lightly Tour.)

    For now, I'm adding houseplants, throw pillows and good sturdy furniture (not the crappy particle board things we've had up until now) to make our house feel like home sweet home.

    Do you own or rent?  How would you describe your ideal home?

    We bought our first house about 2 years ago...and are looking at moving again in the next year or so. The house we ended up buying we actually didn't even want to look at at first cuz' we thought it was just too small....but we LOVE IT! Not too big, not too small. Fenced in yard. Fireplace. Big, floor to ceiling arched window in the living room.

    My husband finally found a job he likes, but it is an hour away. 120 miles a day is a lot with gas prices where they are, so we are looking at moving closer in a year or so. We would like to build and stay put for a while. I prefer the older style homes where there are actually seperate rooms instead of the open concept thing that is so popular right now. Smallish bedrooms for the kids and a toy/rec room for all their toys is what I would prefer. I've never liked having all the toys in their room with them. My husband would like to have an office/den/library. We both want a TRUE fireplace...none of the gas/electric stuff. I always thought it would be fun to have a basement with a big open room so that kids have space to just run and be wild in those months when it's not so nice to go outside (we live in Wisconsin). And I would love a big, fenced in yard. Those are our dreams...we'll see what money allows when the time comes.

    I have never wanted a very large house, as that just means more to clean :) Best of luck in your house hunt.

    I hope, you find the house that you want and will be happy living in it.
    How many kids do you have and how old are they?
    I'm sure, they'll be just as excited as you are, about buying your own house.

    We just bought a house 3 months ago. My daughter loves it....especially her room. There were 2 girls living in there before (ages 18 months and 3 years), so it had a Winnie the Pooh theme going with pale green walls. And we had gotten a lot of Pooh items for my daughter's birthday. They had 2 bars up for child sized clothes in the closet. It was perfect, until we realized that it was the hottest room in the house when it got hot, and my daughter sweats a lot (takes after Hubby, haha). But nonetheless, we're closer to a lot of my friends and family since we're back never where I grew up. There is a 3rd bedroom/office, but it's huge, so I'm not sure what we'll do when #2 comes along and if #2 is a boy. I can't see 2 of them in the one room like the girls had it before. We can always build back or up, I guess...we'll see when the time comes. I wish we had a little more carpet though, and a little less lawn to mow. Love our kitchen though!! I'm not a great cook but I love cooking and trying new things so that's great. So spacious, and my daughter has her own cabinet for her "cooking equipment and utensils" (aka plastic containers, etc). Good luck with house hunting, and hope you find what you're looking for.

    @hannahtan528@xanga - I
    have 3 boys, 4 yrs, 2 yrs and 8 months. My older ones I think
    are just tired of moving so it will be nice to tell them that it will
    be the last time.

    @mamafox - How are you dealing with your 8 month old baby?
    I have a 6 month old baby girl.
    She's a challenge and she's my first.
    I'm only 22 and it's hard at first, but now, it's not so bad.
    She's so frigidity, that she fell off the bed last week.
    Thanks goodness, she's alright and nothing happened.

    @hannahtan528@xanga - First, you aren't "only" or "just" anything. Small rant about that.

    All 3 of my boys have done a kamikaze move off a bed or couch at least once. Kids are sturdy and sometimes even bounce. My youngest is a bit more clingy then my older two so that makes it a bit harder but I'm enjoying the stage he's at now. He's so bubbly and goofy.

    @mamafox - Yea, we have to enjoy the times, when our kids are at a young age.
    When they get older, they want to be with their friends and don't think, hanging out with their parents, is cool.
    My cousin, she's about 35 now and before she turned one years old, she fell of a three story stairs, while she was in her little walker.
    Her mom didn't know, because her mom was in the kitchen cooking.

    @hannahtan528@xanga - Wow. That's scary.

    And pfft, I am and will stay so much cooler then any of their friends

  • hannahtan528@xanga

    @mamafox - How old are you?
    Yes, we have to be in
    the lives of our children, even when their babies, so when they grow
    up, they will still be here and talk to us, when they have problems.

    We bought our house after being married just over a year and have lived there for a year and a half. We're in the process of redoing some things..it's a fixer-upper, for sure! But it's been fun, deciding what colors we want, what tile in the kitchen, cabinets, etc. My husband at one time was considering us moving to Texas because he had seen a lot of houses within our price range that were pretty generous...Are the property values going up over there? I would definitely recommend buying as soon as you're sure you can afford. So many families are having to foreclose on their homes the last few years because of money problems, not being able to afford the mortgage, etc. So, if you guys can afford it, why not? It's great owning because you're not just throwing your money away, it's going into equity! Good luck!
