Childproofing: Coffee Table Toppers
by Mama LionRecently, tpmoon asked me about my coffee table top cover so I thought maybe some of you other moms might be interested as well:

It's not THAT padded, but I figure it's better than nothing. I found that it's good for when Baby Lion is trying to bite on the table so that he doesn't scratch the coffee table up and damage his teeth. I also think it might be useful in the future for when Baby Lion puts his toys on top of the coffee table so as to prevent scratching as well.
How did you childproof your coffee table or other living room furniture?

that's clever! We've actually just done without the coffee table, for..wow since we've had children. There wasn't a need to childproof other furniture. However we won't be buying "nice and new" furniture until the kids are much older and not prone to accidents, spills and sticky fingers.
I cannot remember what my parents did when me and sister were babies are those years ago.
I think we had a cloth on the dining room table since we were used to like to draw and my parents did not want us to wreak the table by putting deep marks into it.
What a good idea! I broke my nose on our coffee table when I was learning to walk, or so my mom tells me. That would have been a wonderful thing in our house.
oh cool, if i had a wooden coffee table, i'd def look into that! we had a glass one, so we just got rid of it and bought 2 padded tray-top ottomans from walmart. they've been great so far, and baby koala loves pushing them around (they're on wheels!) the room and playing peek-a-boo from behind. i don't think we'll buy a nice coffee table for another 5-10 years.
We took our coffee table out because Baby keeps getting stuck under it and ends up ramming her head several times in her attempts to get out. I think the whole thing with the lip being lower and having to duck to get out confuses her right now. In any case, it's just a garage sale find so I don't care if it gets messed up. We don't really have any really nice stuff because we move so much (military) and things tend to get torn up that way. I wouldn't really be too sad about something getting scratched or broken or lost. I do like your cover though, it's better than putting ugly foam strips on it.
Thanks for sharing. We don't have a coffee table either because we're afraid of the corners, and haven't found a nice round/oval one that we like. Maybe now we can get one.

That is awesome! I have a coffee table that our dog scratched and I've been afraid of the boys getting a splinter or something from it. That would fix the ugliness too :)
funny that you post on this- there's a scar on my eyebrow from when i ran into the corner of my great grandparent's coffee table when i was little. stiches, the works.
after that episode, they put these rubber protectors on the sharp corners to prevent future incidents
us kids are all grown up now, and 14 years later they're still there :)
My coffee table has edges rounded from years of use - and it was a cheap one at that -- my parents coffee table is a glass topped one. My dad cut a piece of plywood the size of the top - placed that on top. Mom covered it with a blanket and presto - child proof table.
We got rid of our old coffee table and bought a storage ottaman instead. Not my favorite piece of furniture but it is padded.
this is actually pretty clever!
Coffee table...hmmm...Oh that thing they used to stand on and jump from it to the couch and then back again (if they were lucky and didn't miss). Yeah, we don't have one of those anymore. But that thing looks really nice if we were to ever have one again.
