Cloth-Disposable Hybrid: gDiapers
by Mama HippoWhile pregnant and attempting to make all the 1,000,003 decisions involved with having and caring for a baby, I briefly considered trying to go with cloth diapers... but it was very brief. Honestly, the convenience of disposables (and the fact that we don't have a dryer) won over, especially after reading a few reports that questioned whether cloth diapers are really that much more eco-friendly when you take into account the energy, water, and detergents needed to wash them. Also, where we live in Switzerland all trash is burned, so while that still adds to carbon emissions at least all these diapers aren't going into a landfill to hang around for 500 years.
I did later hear about a sort of cloth-disposable hybrid diapers called gDiapers. These diapers have a cloth outer covering, and a disposable insert that can be thrown away (but decomposes much faster than regular diapers), or can be flushed down the toilet or even composted (pee diapers only). This option greatly intrigued me, and so when I was shopping at Central Market with my sisters the other day and saw that the store carried starter packs of these diapers, I figured I'd give them a try.
And so far, so good! The diapers fit pretty well, though they're amusingly bulky compared to the thin Pampers we normally use. They are pretty cute on him, though. He hasn't had a poopy diaper in them yet, I'm curious to see how they'll do with that, especially since we've lately been having more issues with, um, leakage in his disposables. My parents used to have a compost pile in the backyard, but unfortunately not anymore, so I can't compost the inserts but I've been flushing them down the toilet and that seems to be working pretty well. These do add an extra step or 2 to the diaper-changing process, but it's not really a big deal, and heck if you can flush the poopy diapers as they happen rather than having them sit in a diaper pail in his room for days? That's kinda nice.
Refill inserts I don't think I'll be able to find in Switzerland, so we'll probably go back to our usual disposables when we return after this trip, but I still feel good about keeping at least a few diapers out of the landfills while we're here, and I may very well go back to using these when we move back to the US with D.Anyone else try gDiapers? Did they work well for your baby?

I believe that gDiapers end up using more water than washing cloth twice a week. They say to flush twice when flushing the insert. That's for each insert at each change. Washing in the machine (usuallly 2 dozen dipes at a time) uses about the equivalent of 5 flushes of the toilet. So I do think they're better than disposables (water being a renewable energy), but they aren't equal or better than cloth. I believe the claim that the water used in washing cloth is as bad or worse than filling landfills with something that takes atleast 500 years to decompose is a farce spread by diaper companies. If you apply that logic we would all use disposable everything to save water, but that doesn't make much sense. Imagine: disposable clothes, dishes, bedding, etc. And not to mention the effort used to make, package and distribute disposables!
Sorry for the rant. I just LOVE cloth diapers. I wish other moms knew how easy and fun they really are!
gDiapers do seem to be a happy medium for Mom's who aren't able to use cloth, but don't want to fill the landfills. And they're super cute!
There's cloth diapers that are as convenient as disposables (All-in-ones or pockets) and if you have space for a clothes line or even one of those wooden drying racks you don't have to have a dryer.
I'm glad you like gdiapers though. I've considered using them before like during road trips where I just really don't want to drag around my cloth diapers. They really are a good midway point between cloth and disposables.
thx for the sub^^
I just ordered a few cloth diapers to give them a try. I thought about gDiappers, but I didn't want to have to keep buying the inserts, which I would have had to order from the internet and then pay shipping for. If you reaaly wanted to keep using your gDiapers while in Switzerland you could order them online.
@iddybiddy@xanga - One option to save water might be to just leave the insert in the toilet and just flush it down after the next use. (Preferably not when you have guests over! ) I'm not sure if that would work or not, just a thought.
Im not a mother...but I've seen this on tv and frankly this is what my mother did with me i just dont remember...start toilet training realy early...in the USA kids go to kindergarten w diapers on. Since cloth was the only option in USSR and a dryer was not an option toilet training as early as possible was the route taken. This way you will end up using less diapers of any kind over the course. I concede this is probably much harder and time consuming.
@planetx@xanga - No in the US it is not the norm to send kids off to K still in diapers.
Don't know where that assumption comes from.
Actually the preschools (that's before kindergarten) that were available to my kids at the time they were ready, you couldn't send a kid who wasn't fully learned w/ the potty.
For gDiapers, the opinions always seemed strong either way. I can see how they work for some people but for me personally all cloth seems a lot simpler, even when I didn't have my own machines, but I've been using cloth for a very long time so it's what I'm used to (I've also done disposable for two years and really all cloth is is an extra load or two of laundry a week). I'm glad they work for you
hmmm, those refills are expensive. Something like $30 a week. I'm a cloth diaper-er, partially because I like that it's cheap. I use prefolds with bummis super whisper wraps. The same diapers fit from 15-35 lbs, and actually fit well. I started using them at 5 months and will probably use them all the way to potty training.
wow...sounds interesting. I'm still not exactly sure what it means.
I was reading the blog Parent Hacks, and they said that Amazon just started carrying gDiapers and is hosting a promotion this month to celebrate: 20% off the refill packs with the purchase of a starter kit, which contains two pairs of cotton "little g" pants, two snap-in waterproof liners, and 10 refills. (Here are the gDiaper promotion details.)
If you are already a gDiapers user and don't need another starter kit, you can still save 15% by signing up for Subscribe & Save (details are available on the refill product pages).
I hope this helps!
@iddybiddy@xanga - In the instruction booklet I got, it said only one flush was needed and that's what I found to be true. You could wait and flush them at the same time you pee, as someone else mentioned. The inserts can also be composted (the non-poopy ones) even in a simple backyard compost, or be thrown away and they decompose faster than regular disposables.
I'm sure in some ways they're not as good as all-cloth, but to someone that's not that interested in going all-cloth it seems like a good in-between, not to mention what might be the biggest benefit-- you can get rid of those poopy diapers right away, rather than let them pile up before throwing them away or washing.
