Baby Registry Recs
by Mama KoalaI got this message yesterday from a soon-to-be-mom:
Hi I'm a new mom to be. My first child is coming in August. I'm working on my registry and I need some help. Please tell me what things you have that are must haves and things that are just collecting dust. I'm having a boy so if there are gender specific things I should put on the list let me know. Be specific if you don't mind. For example if there is a diaper that you love tell me what brand - cloth or disposable, doesn't matter. Can you tell I'm a rookie? All recommendations are welcome and appreciated. THANKS!
Here are some of my registry recommendations:
Graco Snugride Infant Carseat - Comes in many different designs (most are reasonably priced), but the most important thing is that it has high safety ratings. We now use a Britax Roundabout (convertible infant/toddler carseat), but we loved the convenience of being able to lift the Snugride out of its base (secured in car) and carry it into the house, store, church, or wherever we were going - beats having to wake up a newborn in slumber!- Ultimate Crib Sheet - This waterproof crib cover is essential if you don't enjoy changing mattress sheets during the night when baby has a diaper blowout or a major spit-up incident. It snaps onto the crib slats (so obviously not practical if you're not going to be using a crib), right on top of the regular sheet. The only con is that you don't get to see the pretty sheet that came with your bedding set hehe.
Take Along Swing - Well, any swing will do really, but we had a portable one similar to this one and it was perfect for our 1BR apartment at the time. Also, it doesn't take up much space in the closet when baby outgrows it, and it fits easily into the trunk of a car for trips to Grandma's. For the first few months, when Baby Koala was fussy, I'd put her in the swing and she would drift off to sleep!- Boppy - If you plan on breastfeeding, it's nice to have a nursing support pillow (mine has a velvety "Luxe" cover, which I love). The Boppy was really helpful for me, especially during the first 6 months (as baby got older, I didn't need any support since she was so quick!). This is also great as an all-around support pillow when baby is learning to sit up.
- Receiving Blankets - Used not only for swaddling, but also as blankets, spit-up catchers, head supports... you get the picture. I liked the ones that are somewhat "oversized" because they were easier to use for swaddling. Mama Platypus also posted a review on SwaddleMe Wraps that might be helpful.
Side-Snap (or Side-Tie) Tees - We had some that my mom brought from Korea, and Baby Koala lived in them for the first few weeks. I hated pulling onesies over her tiny head (they seem so fragile when they're that small, and you're a first-time mom), and it was much easier to slip her arms into side-snap tees. The only problem is, they're not that easy to find in the US. The Gerber ones tend to run really small (so buy a size or two larger), and the Carter's ones aren't sold in a lot of stores. The Internet might be the best source.
One other thing I realized is that it's not as important to put "older baby" items on the registry. Unless, of course, you're going to have several baby showers and you think the registry will be cleaned out. For example, my cousin gave us a really nice Peg Perego stroller at our baby shower, and it sat in the closet (and then onto the moving truck, and into our new closet) for 5 months before we even got to use it.
So how about it moms? Let's help her out by listing the best registry tips you can think of - what she needs, what she'll love, and what she can do without!

I would suggest some kind of sling, wrap or mei tai. The are invaluable for being able to hold carry the baby when he/she is sleeping, fussy while still having your hands available to do what you need to. Including use the loo.
The prices can be a bit steep, but if you know anyone who sows there are lots of patterns online for any of the baby carrier styles. That way they can be had for much less.
Actually ... We preferred the Graco Safe Seat carseat. It accomodates a bigger baby ... so baby can be rear facing longer, which is really better.
Baby Carrier - YES! I love ours. I went through FIVE before I found one I truly love. ERGO BABY. It is way more comfy then the baby bjorn, easier to get on then a moby, and you can put it on (front, back, or hip) with no help. They also have an infant insert, so it works from birth.
If you're going to breast feed... nipple cream!!! I used Medela Lanolin...which was really good. But I've heard great reports on the nipple cream available from www.earthmamaangelbaby.com
Safer Bath Sponge thingy from Target.com (it's blue with fish on it) LOVE IT! We used in the tub from when our daughter was very tiny. Just hang it up to dry, no squeezing or anything. Love it. Now that she is older and uses a bath ring seat, I use the sponge thingy as a need pad next to the tub.
Swaddling blankets: www.adenandanais.com BEST swaddling blankets EVER. Seriously. LOVE THEM. They are made of soft muslin...so it stretches...gives a great swaddle. I also use mine for nursing covers, light blankets, stroller sun cover ... lots of stuff.
We didn't like Huggies dipes. They never contained ANY poo. Pampers worked better for us. But, I am going to switch to cloth. Using a prefold and cover with a pocket cover for night time use. I'll either go Thirsties or Whisper cover.
That's all I can think of right now.
If I think of more, I will post again.
I love the Boppy, even though my baby is too heavy to use it in the traditional way, we still find tons of uses for it. I also love Huggies diapers, they are the only diaper that both fits right and contains everything. Another thing that we loved was our Baby Bjorn front carrier. My hubby loved to carry our daughter in it until she got to about 22 lbs then she was just too heavy for our shoulders, although the weight limit on the carrier is about 25 pounds. Oh and we have a Fisher-Price 3 in 1 baby bathtub which was the greatest thing ever. Comes with a sling for newborn (before the cord falls off) that keeps the baby secure and not slipping around, then you remove the sling and it has a padded slanted area to help support the non-sitting baby, finally it has a wider part where sitting baby goes. Our girl is nine months, 24 lbs, 30 inches now and still fits in it great.
One thing we could have done without is our bottle warmer. It's easier enough to heat a glass or mug of water in the micro then put the bag of milk or bottle in that to warm it perfectly.
The Boppy was a must!!
I would DEFINITELY also recommend some sort of bouncy/swinging seat that cradles them. I would say that 80% of the time, babies sleep in one of these rather then a bassinett which is a waste of money, I would say. I have the
Boppy Cradle in Comfort Bouncer - Bluebut in pink, and she slept in this for 4 months before she touched her crib, and we now put her in it to play. That has been my lifesavor!
A stroller/car seat duo carrier. The base stays in the car, but you can move the actual seat from the base to the stroller and it's so convienient. They are called travel systems and I love mine...it's
Graco Passage Travel System- Abbingtonand believe me, if your baby falls asleep in the car, you can just take out the baby, car seat and all and bring him in the house without having to wake him up. FANTASTIC.
The Bumbo seat is something that's nice for a baby 3-7 months when she still can't quite sit on their own. It's my favorite, because she's getting so antsy at 6 months and she doesn't want to be on the floor because she can't crawl yet, but she's tried of being on her back, so sitting pleases her. It's not a must, but it is definitely worth it when your baby is a little older
Bumbo Baby Sitter - BlueIf you plan to bottle feed, a bottle warmer is amazing! It free's up your pan and is so much quicker and they are so inexpensive!
Munchkin Deluxe Bottle and Food WarmerIt is a lifesavor!! And worth the 20$
You can never have too many onsies, bibs, or socks. So grab as many as you want. I have like a billion more, but i'll be quiet now
I would higly recommend BumGenius 3.0 cloth diapers. The best diaper I've ever used. Disposables pale in comparison. Holds in all messes, and contains runny breastmilk poo in really well! Best of all, it's one size, and adjustable! It's a pocket diaper, so it's great for overnight use too (you can adjust the absorbency of it). And even though it's a cloth diaper, it has microfleece lining that feels pretty dry next to baby's skin! And it's the trimmest cloth diaper I've seen. Many cloth diapers are very bulky, but these are not much more bulky than disposables...at least when the baby is bigger anyway. They're a big investment if you ONLY use them for the diaper stash, but So worth it because you'll save money on not having to buy crappy disposables (no pun intended!).
