Sassy Butterfly Recall
by Mama LionOk there's no recall (not that I know of), but there SHOULD BE! Look what happened to Baby Lion's Sassy butterfly teething toy:
Do you see in the middle of the body how the paint has come off?
It's one thing if the paint scratched off by accident...
But as you can see it MELTED off and onto his other toy! I don't know how the paint would have gotten on there unless it melted off, right? When I felt the damaged section on the butterfly it was sticky! I'm SO mad because not only is his fave teether damaged, but it could have been a potential health hazard for my baby AND it damaged his other toy. This cannot be a good sign, right?? Well, I didn't know what to do about this so I just took pictures and went to the Sassy website and emailed them with a complaint.Update: I got an email from Sassy yesterday...
Thank you for your email. We were sorry to hear of the problem you encountered with the Teething Wing Butterfly. Be assured we only use safe non-toxic materials. The safety of the children playing with our products is our primary concern, and all of our products meet and exceed all government safety standards set by the (CPSC) Consumer Product Safety Commission and (ASTM) American Society For Testing & Materials. We test and re-test our products, and we're proud of that fact. A 3rd party lab, for safety and compliance to standards, reviews our product designs, and that same 3rd party lab, for safety and compliance, review initial production of each product. We then perform in-house testing on the products when they arrive before shipment to our retailers. As I said initially, safety for all the children using/playing with our products is our biggest concern. We would like to send you a postage-paid envelope to get the toy back for a Quality Control inspection, and we'll send you a merchandise credit order form, so you may choose a couple different teethers from us. The envelope and form will go out in the mail next week. Each consumer is valued, and we thank you for taking the time to contact us.
So yay!!! I'm glad that they use safe non-toxic materials, although that doesn't mean that I want to give Baby Lion that damaged toy. Just because it's safe and non-toxic does not mean I want it in his mouth. That was nice of them to give me merchandise credit so that I could choose more than one teether. YAY! Issue resolved.
Have you ever sent a complaint directly to the manufacturer before? What was the result?

No I always call, and get no good response. So glad it worked out for you.
For some reason, I usually can never motivate myself to contact the manufacturer. Instead, if that happened to me, I would just be annoyed and throw out the teething ring.
One time I actually did contact a company. Huggies sensitive wipes made my daughter break out like crazy. I wouldn't have cared, but other brands that were labelled "sensitive" worked just fine. When I told Huggies, they apologized and sent me 2 $5 coupons for any Kimberly-Clark product. I was happy with how they handled it.
So, good for you for telling them what you think, and I'm glad that you were happy with how they resolved the issue!
I once found a piece of glass in my mouth (!) when I was eating apple sauce or something similar, I can't remember exactly. I called the toll-free number on the jar, and the next week, a sales guy was at our door to pick up the jar I had found the glass in, and to find out where we bought it. He also brought a huge bag full of different conserves and a formal apology. Two weeks later, we received a letter following up their investigation (they had taken back the entire batch from that store and found no more glass in it). Now THAT is service!
several years ago I bit into a hershey bar with almonds and chomped down on an almond SHELL.. I was mortified. Thankfully none of my kids had been eating that particular one. I called the number on the back and talked to a customer service rep and they right away asked me to send it in etc. I received prompt attention AND they sent us a ton of FREE candy bar coupons.. good for, if I had to guess, about $30 worth of candy. They also sent a bunch of free candy with the coupons and a letter of apology etc. I was very impressed!
Im glad you got good service too, gives credit to the company for that. They could have blown you off. Hope it all settles and he gets a new favorite teether :)
I'm glad you got a good reply back from them and they are taking responsibility for it!
i'm glad that everything worked out for you, things like this, scare me & i'm always sort of paranoid since the whole recall of a lot of toys. luckily, none of my daughter's toys have had anything like that.
I contact manufacturers often when I am unhappy with a product. I usually write emails or letters because I find they get a better response than phone contact. I like to let companies know what is wrong with their products so they can (hopefully) take that into consideration when developing new products. I almost always get a good response that makes me feel validated and like the company actually cares. This in turn softens my negative experience and makes me want to give them another try.
Oh"
Comment for you!!=)
I use to work for a baby store... and I had to contact manufacters ALL the time!
Sassy is a good manufacter... a while back they went thru some hard times with labor and had to cut back on materials, but all thier products were up to standards... just not exactly what they wanted it to me... you might have gotten a toy from that time frame. And it happens... one time we got a china shipment of a teething ring that had been discontinued for three years... no clue why it got sent us... but it had like 25 address lables on it from ppl sending it from place to place lol
I am really glad that you got a positive response. However, when I read your story, it occurred to me that once you send them the defective product you no longer have proof that the paint came off. I hate to sound so suspicious, but it seems that these days the only time big companies do something nice is when they are performing a major act of CYA. I'm not really familiar with the manufacturer since my "baby" is nearly 12 years old.
If you decide to send the teether back to them, at least take a couple of pictures of yourself holding it so you can prove that you had one. And don't throw away the other toy. Keep it somewhere in case this becomes an issue somewhere down the road so you can prove what happened.
if you want something natural and really non-toxic for your baby to teeth on you can buy those mini bagels and freeze them. it works great and if they accidentally get a piece of something it's just bagel... not melted "non- toxic" plastic or paint.
thats scary. as a mother you expect all teething items to be safe.. and for the paint to come off... is just scary... glad to hear its non toxic. just dont give it to the baby.
good luck
I'm so glad they gave you a positive response. I would certainly not want my baby putting that in her mouth! EEK!
@NotUeberMommy - Wow...how scary!! Im glad they took care of it though!!
Im glad that it all worked out for you!!! Have a great week.
After they recalled 2 out of 2 of our Sassy brand toys, I swore I'd never buy another one again. You can't go the short-cut route with baby toys, and that's the name of their game.
