Questions at 8 Months
by Mama Lion
So last weekend while we were at BabiesRUs I noticed that Baby Lion was staring at a Thomas the Train DVD and smiling. We were in the DVD aisle and I parked my cart there with him in it while I was deciding on what toy to get him. He just kept looking at the DVD and smiling. I'm wondering if he likes Thomas the Train... do babies start liking that kind of stuff this early? Does the show come on TV? If so, what channel??
Another thing I noticed last month was when I was at my mom's. Me and Baby Lion were in the parked car and there was a big, red, fire truck parked across the street. He couldn't stop staring at it. I guess he likes fire trucks, trains, and cars?? It seems like it, but I'm just wondering how he knows what they are... he's only 8 months old! I guess daddy will be glad that he likes boy stuff. He'd be really worried if he caught Baby Lion playing with mommy's Hello Kitty stuff
.Another thing I'm wondering about is his sitting up. He can't sit up unassisted yet. It seems like many babies his age can sit up on their own, but Baby Lion cannot. I know that I should just let him be and that when he's ready he will sit up, but I FEEL like he can sit up but just doesn't want to. It would just make my life that much easier if he could just sit up...like bath time would be a cinch! I wonder if there's anything that would motivate him to sit up... it seems like he just loves to be on his tummy crawling everywhere and he prefers that over sitting in one spot and playing.
It seems like every month I'm concerned about one thing or another. There should be a hotline that you can call anonymously with all these questions. I guess I could call the Dr, but I don't want her to think I'm crazy!! At least I have you guys and you guys don't think I'm crazy with all these questions, right??

I have an 8 month old too...he is so funny because he loves to be outside & will holler until we bring him outdoors. i think babies know more than we think....as far as sitting up the age range is so wide that I am sure he is fine. Do you have the book "What to Expect the 1st Year"? It has month by month chapters 7 has been very helpful to me. Have a blessed weekend!
Where in NC are you located? Did you live somewhere else? We have lived in WA,NV,MI, & NC...I am nosey I guess!
Oh and the fire truck and cars and trains... yea he is a baby but he is still a guy... idk what it is about big tough things like trucks and such that get our attention but it does.
Who knows, perhaps that will motivate him to sit up. After all, you have to sit to drive right?
Haha I'm getting way ahead of myself and I am rambling about nothing... so yea just done freak out, you aren't crazy, and Baby Lion is alright =)
Thomas the Train is on PBS, you can see the time it comes on in your area here.
he'll probably surprise you by sitting up all by himself one day soon!
i think the first few months, girls and boys are similar in what they like... but after that, they really do start showing their likes and dislikes, and it's fascinating! i've seen a lot of baby boys go crazy over a car toy, while baby girls can't seem to get enough of accessories and stuffed animals. at the same time, a little bit of hello kitty never hurt anyone ;)
My daughter LOVES Thomas! We have several dvd's of it. I like it much better than Dora! She loves trains, airplanes, helicopters, trucks, boats, etc. I think most kids do for some reason.
My daughter started taking an interest in particular toys when she was really young...younger than eight months. I think babies are quite smart even at those early ages. He also might be interested in the colors. G took a real shine to anything that was yellow...she just wanted to play with it so bad! She'd ignore all the other colored blocks just to hold the yellow one. Perhaps your son loves the bright red of the firetrucks and the lively blue color of Thomas? Besides, kids just seem really drawn to automotive toys anyway.
I'm sure you don't have to worry about him not sitting up yet. I think the age range for that is pretty wide and varying. Like someone above said, What To Expect the First Year is an amazing book. I have the first three books in that series (currently using the toddler years one) and I've found them pretty invaluable. My pediatrician recommended them to me.
Try a bobby to assit him sitting and getting stroner. I don't remember what month my daughter was sitting up alone but I do know she was walking at 9 1/2 months...so it was probally a few months before that lol okay well I'm lookin at old pics and it was around 5 or 6 months when she started. But don't be too worried. If you are just ask the doctor at the next visit.
Hey may just really like the colors. A red fire truck is a really striking, bold. fun thing to look at.
Do you have a bumbo chair? Donovan (4 months) loves it, helps him sit up. Might help with practicing using those muscles? Don't know. I would try not to worry about it, though. Babies hit different milestones are different times.
I wouldn't worry about the not sitting up - especially since he's already crawling. I also have an 8-month old, and she is sitting up. However, every baby is different, and I wouldn't worry about. If by 9 months he still isn't sitting, you can ask your doctor at the 9-month check-up visit. But I agree with what someone else said - he'll probably just one day start sitting up! :)
I think at this age it's the bold colors and big basic faces (Thomas's face is big eyes and a smile) that grabs baby's attention. I do like the Thomas shows though - they're pretty mellow and quiet, lol! I don't think you're crazy either, babies just do things on their own time table. My oldest didn't even walk until about 13 months, though he was cruising around furniture forever.
Every child is so different. I can't remeber when my kids started sitting un assisted, but my first would talk in complete sentenses when he was 1 1/2, and my second didn't till almost 3. There is no text book child, and I think as long as he is hitting other milestones, you shouldn't worry too much about it. Easier said then done, because its a mothers job to worry about every little thing. I have 4, and unfortunatly, I still worry about every little thing with all of them. Ugh.
my daughter's almost 8 months... i know what you mean about asking questions...sometimes you'd think it'd be nice if babies came with instruction manuals... i got 'caring for your baby and young child: birth to age five' and it's been pretty helpful thus far..
You are NOT crazy! Well, if you are, then I am too
I worry about all those things, too, and so far, they have all worked out fine. My son is almost 14 months old now, and it took him until about 9 months to sit up unassisted. And he was born two weeks late, too!
The weird thing is, hubby never seems to worry about his development at all - he's having too much fun just being with him! I guess it's a mommy thing... My son will not stand (let alone walk) unassisted now, and I'm thinking I need to let him work it out on his own. He tends to have sudden epiphanies (don't know how else to describe it) and all of a sudden, he's doing all these new things that he never even tried a day ago!
Not crazy at all! I know how it feels. Of all my kids, my son Ollie developed things like that the slowest. He pushed up, sat up, crawled, and walked always a few months behind his sisters. Looking at him now, though, you could never tell! There are some therapies you can do at home to help inspire him to do thing sooner. I've got to run, but I'm sure you could google them.
Our youngest son has been totally different than our first two. He did everything later (rolling, crawling, sitting, teething...) and is definitely more into the 'typical boy stuff' than my other two. He started liking cars (and making car noises) as soon as he could crawl and push them around the floor and he totally loves any kind of ball.
This is your first, right? I know I was definitely more worried about the developmental stages with my first. Now (my third is 21 months old) I am viewed by some as too lax. I guess I have just realized that worrying really doesn't help at all. But I think all moms go through it to a certain extent.
@sidewayslife@xanga - I worry a lot less these days too, now that I've been a mom for a long time and have four. I figure if something is really out place or not normal, I will notice.
I wouldn't worry about him not sitting up yet. My baby is almost a year old, and he's not walking, which is what I'm concerned about - even though I realize the average age for babies walking is about 15-18 months. I'm very sure although your baby hasn't developed in the sitting up, he's most likely developing in other areas - such as recognizing the trains, trucks, and cars! I don't think mine has a fascination with those at all. =)
@boysinheaven@xanga - i don't live in NC, i live in CA. you must have me confused with another momaroo mom.
