Little Bow Peep
I don't know about where you live, but hairbows are a MUST for little girls here. I've found that it's even a little bit scary how important they are for some people to have for their little girl.
My daughter has a bow for nearly every outfit she has in her closet, plus every color in every shade of the rainbow in solids. This is NOT because I feel she has to keep up with the trend. I make them so she's a walking billboard.
I worked for a couple boutiques in my area and learned specific techniques that have allowed me to make ones that do not pull apart or go flat. I recently decided to share some of these things with the world, and I started selling my work on Etsy. Many of the "bow outlets" you find will charge way too much, and people are perfectly willing to pay because it's a quality product. I just wish more people knew about what I offer - I buy ribbon at wholesale and on sale so I can offer my bows to others for much cheaper. You can visit my store at http://designsbysummer.etsy.com if you'd like to peek!
In addition to bows, I also make headbands:

I also sell my bow instructions on CD-ROM. Videos accompany the written instructions with step-by-step photos explaining in detail what to do.
Making bows this way is very time-consuming, and the materials required can be a bit cluttering. You can purchase bows pre-made or learn to make them yourself. I'd be glad to share!
Do you like to accessorize your little girl's hair? Anyone else make their own hairbows?

I can make hairbows, but for an entirely different reason. I used to be a dog groomer! Those handbands are super cute!!!
SO adorable! :D
I know how to make a bow out of ribbon, but it's not very sturdy and can fall apart easily. But yes, I do adorn my daughters hair with accessories. She still doesn't have enough hair to put barrets or bows in them which makes me very sad. So I put headbands and wraps on her hed, like the one in my profile picture. I CAN NOT wait till she gets hair. She will always be a well dressed, matching little girl, with every accessory, so help me Lord.
I have no idea whether or not hairbows are a necessity for my niece. I'll have to find out; it might be something to keep in mind for birthdays, etc.
My daughter loves anything in her hair and I love to put things in it too! Her hair is cork-screw curly and hard to do much of anything with other than pig tails or a head band. I really like the ones you have here and will have to take a peek!
@mommy_2130 - it's so fun to dress them up. it really doesn't last forever. soon enough they'll be rolling their eyes at your suggestions! i do have interchangeable headbands in my store for infants with no hair. they can still wear any size bow! and if you ever need instructions, you know where to find me!
@StraderMom@xanga - thank you! super curly hair must be so much fun. what kind of conditioner do you use on her hair? i always wonder that. My daughter has unruly hair that demands conditioner!
@Southernlass@xanga - i taught my friend how to make bows and she makes them for dog groomers! she makes a lot of money. i'd like to make them for selling to groomers, i'd just feel weird walking in saying, "Hi! Buy my bows!"
@janusfiles@xanga - moms seem to really love them as gifts!
Isnt making bows fun? I make bows for my daughter and for a local consignment store and Kids sales in the area. I have also done some special orders and i love it! I have to check your store out your headbands are so adorable. i dont think my Lexi would keep them in her hair tho. did you buy your directions when you learned or did you just pick things up on the internet?
*sigh* those are so pretty. My daughters don't like anything in their hair.
I would love for our next baby to be a girl and if the baby is a girl, I'm totally going to splurge and buy stuff from you! I've always wanted to "doll up" my girl and your stuff is SO cute!
@mamagoldfish - It is ALWAYS worth a shot. You can order them in bulk from some catalogs, but they are pretty expensive. I would also use cheaper ribbon because the dogs usually scratch at their ears and tear them up. They won't last long whether the ribbon is expensive or not!
@Heidirhodes - I actually didn't learn through directions, it is a combination of learning from my grandmother, the boutique I worked for and some techniques I made on my own. Then I just so happened to get a job at a bow-tique and learned a great deal through my boss yelling and screaming at me to get it right :) I ordered some directions long before I had my daughter because I wanted to make some for friends with new babies... But they were never good enough to learn from. So I made a manual of my own to sell because I knew how frustrating it was to buy something that didn't really show you clear instructions. Good luck with your business ventures!!!
@ladywolf_aq@xanga - mine didn't either, but she got used to it :)
my daughter started wearing haribows, first, because so many people thought she was a boy (the pink outfit & long lashes didn't do the trick?) & also, because she's just too cute in them! at first i made my own, seeing as they are easy & you can pick whatever ribbons you want, but once i went back to work & started back to 'regular' life again, i began buying due to lack of time to make them. those bows & headbands are adorable!! how old is your girl??
I love putting bows and the cloth headbands on my daughter [she's two months, one week] but, I'm having to buy new headbands every month because her head is growing and causing the headbands she has to leave an awful ring around her head!
I would like to buy some of those Velcro bows to put in babies hair because they just attach to what little hair there is. Do you make those?

I used to do it....years ago. How old is your daughter?
Those are really pretty! I lucked out and had a baby girl with tons of dark hair, and was able to do little pigtails all over her head by the time she was 4/5 months old with the little soft type bands. My daughter has a ton of hair but it's very fine, so bows and barrettes don't stay in very well. We have ok luck with certain pony tail holders, but I usually just let her have her long hair down if we're just going to be home all day
My daughters hair is fine as well and doesn't hold them. As a baby I would dab a tiny dab of toothpaste to hold them into place. When she asks me too I do her hair or when she has ballet. I think the bow rage is huge around the places I have lived for the 4 and under ages.
My daugher hated to have me do her hair. But a long time ago I used to decorate barrettes by braiding ribbon into the them and put beads on the ends.
those are so cute! sometimes i wish i had a little girl to dress up..it must be tons of fun.
@LittleLilaSmith@xanga - She's 19 months old. How did you make your bows?
@ArmyKnightsLady@xanga - The good thing about alligator clips is that you can put a little coating of hot glue inside the clip, let it dry, and it will hold really well in any kind of hair. You could always try that! I often do that for special orders when people say they have a child with fine hair.
@mamaturtle - see what I wrote to ArmyKnightsLady for tricks on fine hair!
