Refusing Solids
by Mama Lion
I almost did a post about how Baby Lion was starting to eat solids really well, but I decided not to just because I didn't want to jinx it. He WAS eating stage 1/stage 2 foods 3x/day everyday for about a week and a half. I was so proud of him because once meal time rolled around I'd get his food ready and he'd just open up when I said "aaaah" and he would gobble up the whole thing (one whole jar if it was stage 1 and 1/2 a jar if it was stage 2). But then for some reason he stopped opening up for me and now when I say "ahhh":- he turns his head the other way
- he buries his head in his arms and starts rubbing his eyes pretending he's sleepy
- he pretends he's watching TV when I KNOW he's not even interested in whatever's on
- he puts his lips together and closes it REALLY tight!
- he runs away (I feed him when he's in his walker. I noticed that he eats better and more when I allow him to pace himself and eat when he wants to eat instead of forcing him to sit down and eat everything all at once. So yah, I follow him around in his walker
.) - he's done this one time when I stood in front of his walker with his food so that he wouldn't go anywhere. I for sure thought he would open up and eat it since I THOUGHT I had trapped him. But you know what he does? He backs up a little bit in his walker and goes AROUND me
.
Is this normal? Did your baby go through a stage of suddenly refusing solids??

No, neither did... how old is Baby Lion? And what foods are you feeding him now? As in, veggies? meats? I found I had to mix a few things together sometimes to get my girls to eat when they didn't like what I offered them. I did the veggies and meats first (after the whole rice and formula mix of course, and some fruits for breakfast), but did mix a little sweetness (applesauce, pears, etc) to make things more palatable. I thought about what I like to have with my main dishes and added those in small doses and that helped a bit. I wouldn't worry too much thought. Babies instinctively go with what their bodies need and don't need. Never hurts to call the pediatrician either.
you're not alone! they say that as babies learn what they like and dislike, they become more assertive and that it's ok. baby koala isn't picky with food, but she has her moments. for example, recently she suddenly decided that she hates sauce on her pasta, and this is after many times of gobbling it up. she'll love something for a while, and then refuse to eat it.
my friend's daughter is going through a pretty long stage of refusing everything besides soy milk. my friend is worried because she's losing weight, but she said that the doctor wasn't concerned because she was still growing in height.
sometimes babies decide that pureed food sucks, and they want the good stuff. at 8 months, it's ok to give him some regular solids - maybe he'll change his mind about food! i started baby koala on steamed carrots or broccoli (just steam until really soft), small pieces of slightly toasted bread, fluffy rice, plain noodles (udon noodles chopped up are great), and mushy fruit like bananas. she LOVED all of the above... until she got a little older and realized what else is out there hehe.
My boys were very vegetarian when they were really little. They detested all forms of meat if it was pureed. I found that if I mixed the veggies and the fruits in complementary flavors they gobbled it down. Other than the meats, my boys ate like champs. Oh they didn't like the deserts either, except for the peach cobbler. My biggest thing when they were little was keeping track of what they ate over the course of a week, not daily. So long as I felt they were getting in enough food during a seven day period I wouldn't freak out. I did offer it often just in case, but I didn't ever make them finish. When they walked away I just let them, kids eventually get hungry. I've also found that this philosophy works smashingly with toddlers as well. Now that they are a bit older I restrict foods to meal times, but they still have the option to walk away and wait until the next meal time.
My mother used to force us to eat as kids and I have a love hate relationship with food as a result. I didn't want to continue that trend with my children. Just my path though, you need to find what is right for you :)
Absolutely! This happened with my second daughter. After a few frustrating weeks, I finally figured out that she wanted to FEED HERSELF! That was all it took. Yes, it was messier and took longer, but she was happy and she was eating! Good luck.
Mine is going though this now. I can relate even though my son is 16 months old. He was doing really good for a long, eating those Graduates meals 3 times a day with some snacks in between. I thought I was doing SUCH a good job at keeping him healthy and happy. One day he decided that his taste buds weren't happy so he didn't eat....for a long time. Okay, that sounds wrong. He ate, but he didn't want to eat very much. So we had to take a few steps back and buy the jarred food once again. sometimes he still doesn't eat alot, but as long as he has something, I'm fine. I always put James in his high chair, just don't want to start any bad habits later on. He eats better in the high chair than anywhere else.
Although, I know how to trick him into eating now! I mix in a half jar of 3rd foods and half of a can of that Chef Boyardee soups for kids and then I had some ketchup and he does wonderfully. Maybe you could jazz up the baby food, maybe some honey just to make it a tad sweeter. Or ketchup never hurt anyone(unless they break out, so it might not be a good idea just yet).
My son ate stage 1 for about 3 weeks, then refused to eat it again (he was about 5 months then). I gave up trying and then one day as I was eating he watched my fork go from my plate to my mouth and smacked his lips the whole way. I just started mashing my food down and feeding it to him and he hasn't stopped since. He's now 14 and LOVES everything I cook.
I delayed solids, and my kids were ready to feed themselves at around 9-10 months old, when they were grabbing the food, putting in their mouth and eating it. (I often was holding my babies while I ate so this was easy to watch out for) I let them do this once or twice a day, especially at dinner, with just mashed up or very cut up versions of whatever the rest of us were eating. I'd help them eat the mushy foods with a spoon to keep the mess factor down a bit, lol.
