  • Baby Lion Chasing Mommy

    Mama Lionby Mama Lion

I was in the kitchen trying to record a video clip of Baby Lion opening up the kitchen cabinet and poking his head inside, but he caught me with the camera and decided he wanted my camera instead. Of course when I wouldn't give him the camera he scrunched up his face to let me know that he is NOT happy. I ran away from him with the camera in my hands and what did he do?? He chased me from one end of the house to the other. This boy is SO fast in his walker now! He chases me ALL the time!!

Did you get to see his facial expression?? He did it like 3 times! He was never really much of a crier but now that he's older and can express himself better he NEVER cries and always gives us this look that you see in the video when he wants something or is not happy. It's amazing to see the various things he does to try and communicate with me... I'm wondering if it's too early to teach him how to sign.

Did you teach your baby how to sign?  If so, at what age did you start?

Haha! He's all like "Gimme gimme gimme!" Too cute!

Aww he is TOO cute in his walker!! He's definitely old enough to start learning signs. I've heard babies as young as 5 months old signing for milk! I don't know too many signs myself, but I know the sign for milk, and I've been trying to show my daughter that for awhile now. I just have to be more consistent about it, otherwise I'm not sure she'll catch on.

The only sign I ever got my son to learn and use was the sign for "milk."  I don't remember how old he was, though...but it was soooo cute, seeing him do that little squeeze sign when he was hungry!

I taught my daughter "milk" and "drink" but that's about it.  My friend is fluent in ASL and works as an interpreter, so she was all about teaching her little things FOR me.  So now, she says the word and signs along with it.  As she gets older, she is starting to forget, and since I don't really inforce a lot, she might lose it all.  When she wakes up in the mornings, she doesn't really talk for about an hour or so (she's just like me - so not a morning person), so she signs milk, drink, eat and please because she doesn't feel like talking.

    Sooo adorable!!

Alright, so I've heard bits and pieces about this baby signing thing... where did it all start?

    aw....isn't being a mommy great?

I remember hearing that babies at about 9 or 10 months of age know that words have meaning and can understand a lot of our language, so that's a good time to use sign language since they're ready to start communicating and are limited more by their poor mouth/tongue coordination than by brain development.

But reading over the other comments, it's also true that babies can form associations between a particular sound or gesture and something they want much earlier, so perhaps it's never too early to start... which gets me wondering if I should try to start using the signs for "nurse" and "sleep" with D to see if he catches on?

Hahahaha, how cute. He really wanted that camera! I taught my son to say "more" and every now and then he needs help to do it, but I was really late and taught him at like a year old. My niece is 3 now but her mom started signing with her at like a year also and she knows way more signs than James. I'm tempted to teach him more but I'm scared my window came and went. He now talks jibberish.

As I want to be a professional multi-lingual translator/linguist, ASL is one that I want to pick up. And when I have children, I intend to teach (or try to teach) them all the languages I can, but probably ASL from an earlier age, since it doesn't require vocals.
